The 2013 Pig & Poultry Marketing Awards took place in early May and reward production excellence, marketing communications and knowledge transfer. We are delighted that two of our young pig farmers have been recognised for their innovation and forward thinking attitudes.

In the Health & Welfare Award, Norfolk farmer Alex Beard (voted BQP Young Farmer of the Year 2012!) was Highly Commended. It was recognised that as a supplier to Waitrose, Alex works to the additional on farm standards Waitrose operates which includes visual appearance, farmer/stockman training, environmental management, animal welfare and bio security.

Tom Wright, also of Norfolk was awarded the Pig Producer of the Year for the smaller scale business. The judges were very impressed with Tom, having started from scratch and securing a loan in the current climate, Tom has created a sustainable business model with BQP, with high welfare pigs. He has also developed a curtain system which is now used on other farms. “This is an ambitious young man, who will no doubt feature in more awards to come” said the judging panel.
