Triumph for our farmers at Food & Farming Awards!December 21, 2012
At an awards ceremony on Friday 14th December, held at the House of Commons, champions of the UK farming industry were recognised. The Farm Business 2012 Food & Farming Awards were presented to numerous farms, companies and individuals who are actively innovating and generating new ideas within the food and farming industry.
We are absolutely thrilled that two of our young BQP farmers were recognised for their entrepreneurial spirit, picking up Young Farmer of the Year and Highly Commended in the same category.
Winner, Young Farmer of the Year – Tom Wright, from Norfolk (right)
Tom Wright finishes pigs for BQP under contract, and has managed to build a farm entirely from scratch by saving enough money to buy two acres of land from his father. Over five years he has expanded the business to 2,000 pigs. The judges were impressed with Tom building his own operation from scratch. From this experience, he developed his own curtain system which he now supplies and fits to other pig producers. His can-do attitude, entrepreneurial spirit and sound business model really impressed the judges.
Tom received his award from Paul Pomroy, Senior Vice President & Chief Financial Officer, McDonald’s Restaurants.
Highly Commended, Young Farmer of the Year – Alex Beard, from Norfolk (pictured top)
Alex Beard, a 27-year-old farmer’s son from Norfolk, has built a successful pig finishing business supplying BQP, Alex now has nine staff and has diversified into an engineering workshop, making feeders and hoppers for other pig farmers. This Highly Commended accolade is in addition to the award Alex received at the recent BQP Awards where he was voted ‘BQP Farmer of the Year’ by his peers.
Alex received his Food & Farming award from Paul Pomroy, Senior Vice President & Chief Financial Officer, McDonald’s Restaurants.
Many congratulations to both.
