National Pig Awards 2015

We are looking forward to attending the National Pig awards  again on the 4th of November in London.  After a great success last year we are delighted 10 of our farming partners have again been shortlisted!

BQP and our farmers had a successful night at the first National Pig Awards in November 2014. More than 270 producers and industry representatives attended the event which was held at London’s Royal Garden Hotel.

To start on a high, BQP won Multiple Site Producer of the Year and overall Producer of the Year, for our continued effort with communicating with the wider public to improve the profile of pig farming and also for our major investments into buildings and equipment. It was also judged on records of production, the welfare of our pigs and staff and biosecurity measures. Andy Tomson of Peddars Pigs was also a finalist for this award.

Paul Howland received the award for Contract Finisher of the Year. Paul started contract finishing pigs for BQP when he invested in two new builds in 2010. The two other finalists were Simon Hillier (GCF Hillier & Sons) and Tom Wright, both contract finishers for BQP. This award focused on key performance data, for example growth rates and feed conversion rates.

To continue our success, Richard and Maggie Lane (Heath Barn Farm) won the Herd Productivity Award for the outdoor section. This recognised their attention to detail when improving their herd’s productivity, measured by pigs per sow per year.

Young Pig Farmer of the Year went to Tom Wright. Seven years ago, he started his business when he bought 1.5 acres of land and built the first ever new builds. This was widely recognised by BQP and his initiative is now used throughout many other BQP finishing farms. Tom was also successful, as he was a finalist for Innovation of the Year, which was won by BQP. This was awarded for our “new build” construction information pack as a business development concept, which supports farmers for the first 11 batches. Robert Battersby and Rob McGregor of Coxford LSB Pigs was also a finalist for this award.
