Corsham GIVE & GAIN at Larkrise Community FarmMay 23, 2012
Give & Gain day is the UK’s only national day of employee volunteering and on Friday 18th May, Corsham rolled up their sleeves and volunteered their time to help Larkrise Community Farm, a local based charity in Trowbridge, Wiltshire.
It is a working farm that also provides living space for a population of small or domestic animals, plus room for tuition of their students, administration and storage. In school term time they welcome 35-40 students through their doors each week. Their students are referred to them for a variety of reasons, mainly youngsters with special needs, those who have been excluded from school or people from community care homes.
Students are taught how to respect the various different animals and how to care for them on a day to day basis. With some of the students this can help them to gain a formal qualification and to go away from the farm with an increased self-esteem, and for them to have gained some basic lifetime skills from working in the farm environment.
Larkrise also have a riding school for the disabled that can help people build confidence and it gives them chance to build friendships with others.
As part of the Give & Gain initiative, which the Dalehead Division took part part in, Larkrise was looking for volunteers who would spend a day helping with any odd jobs that needed doing.
Kelvin Stewart and Avril Hall kindly volunteered and their task was to repaint all of the purpose built rabbit runs in the barn. Larkrise was extremely pleased with their work and both Kelvin and Avril thoroughly enjoyed themselves. They have both quoted ‘what a great day!’ Avril has also volunteered to help out on their fortnightly voluntary Saturdays.
