Bury & Linton GIVE & GAIN at Newmarket’s Open DoorMay 29, 2012
Give and Gain Day is the UK’s national day of employee volunteering where people work together to help their local community. This year the Linton and Bury St Edmunds sites worked together to offer support at the local charity Open Door based in Newmarket. As part of their work Open Door operate a food bank, a charity superstore and also a warehouse which stores and processes the un-wanted, donated goods to be re-distributed to those in need or sold in the shop to raise much needed funds.
Andrea Anstee, Dawn Golding, Max Courtney and Janet Elliot from Linton, and Michal Kriz and Michaela Krizova from Bury St Edmunds all put their names forward to volunteer.
Everyone had a great day and most importantly provided Open Door with a lot of assistance organising the warehouse to ensure all donations could be put to the best possible use. Some of their observations from the day…..
“It was a very rewarding day and it was a great way to meet people in our community. It gave me a great sense of satisfaction from being able to help others who are less fortunate than ourselves”
“Hard, dirty work but very satisfying to see the progress we had made at the end of the day”
“It was a rewarding and satisfying day and although I am not sure how much of an impact we made, we did sort and tidy a lot of Bric-a Brac. It is refreshing to work for an Organisation that facilitates its employees helping the community”
“A fantastic day, an insight into what an amazing job this charity is doing, and made me realise that I was able to offer help to somebody that was less fortunate than myself. We were given a true understanding of the needs that individuals are able to obtain from Open Door, this charity offers people furniture, bedding, clothes and even food. I will be volunteering again in the very near future, as a great day was had by all of us that attended”
At a follow up visit made by Sarah Steggall, HR Manager from Bury St Edmunds, John Durrant, General Manager for Open Door said “what a fantastic group of people, they all worked really hard, and achieved a fantastic amount in one day. Their hard work has really made a difference”
Overall a rewarding experience for all those that took part and really made a difference for our local community, hopefully this is something we can emulate for Give and Gain Day 2013!
