Boston Dragon Boat RaceAugust 26, 2011
RIP-ROARING rowing action on Boston’s river saw thousands flock to the first Dragon Boat Festival on Sunday 14th August 2011. The River Witham was awash with colour for the action-packed boating spectacular which saw 19 teams compete for winners’ trophies.
Teams made up of 10 crew members and a drum player turned out in force in the supplied dragon-headed boats (Gable Events) for the race heats along a 220-metre stretch of the Witham. Along with the racing action there were a variety of fun family activities – including a dancing Chinese lion and children’s games.
The Dalehead Destroyers finished in 11th place, just under a second out of a semi final spot, despite having to drag a few ringers in on the day. As you will see from the photo my dad and brother both joined in the fun.
The final was won by a team called James Gold with a time of 50.08secs. Mickey’s Finns (50.30secs) came second and Black Pearl (50.53secs) came third. The organisers are hoping to make it an annual event, which we are looking at putting a team in next year.
The rumours are that the organisers have already received an email from a winning dragon racing team in Boston Massachusetts – so we had better get training for next year.
The team raised £550 for charity which will be split between The Variety Club and the S. John Stevens Memorial Trust – a Boston-based charity named after local man John Stevens which raises money for other charities that support a healthy heart.
